 The new guy intro/equipment inquiry

Hi there, been looking at this place for a minute so i decided to join..i want to take my pics to the next level so i need some advice on equipment. I am working with a Nikon F75 and would like to have some advice on scanners, filters, light and such. Whenever i go to these photo shops, i often got the feeling that dudes are out to rob me. IMO, nobody can tell whats best to use than those who really use the stuff. I want to shoot people primarily so what upgrade would you recommend? I wanted to get me some filters, a polarization filter first because having strong colors is one thing i couldnīt get together yet. However, i am open for any advice..Hi :, ) Consider using the Cokin filters, they make a very good polarizer :thumbup:Hi :...... - 2008-11-13

 Buying new (to me) equipment

Well, I've finally managed to get into one of the evening sections of Photo I (black and white film) at the university I work at, so it's time to get some equipment - the program doesn't provide cameras, which gives me a good excuse to buy one  I bought a camera from eBay about a week ago, and that didn't go so well (shutter wouldn't fire). I still am going to go with used equipment, because I want a Nikon FM2n, and I'm looking at KEH. I'm also looking for some advice. This is the stuff: 28-70 F2.8-4.3 TOKINA MACRO AIS (62) / 2 TOUCH 35MM SLR MANUAL FOCUS ZOOM WIDE ANGLE LENS $69.00US FM2N CHROME WITH MF-16 DATA BACK 35MM SLR MANUAL FOCUS CAMERA BODY (Condition EX) $245.00US I also plan on getting some filters (polarizer, UV,...... - 2008-11-13

Thinking about making a big equipment switch

Hey guys, I currently have the gear below. I shoot a lot of sports, so I would like a camera that has a better AF system and a higher burst rate. I was thinking of a used 20D. The metal body would be a plus. Does this sound smart: Sell the XT body, vertical battery grip, 50mm f/1.8 (never use it) and the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 (all in like-new condition).... ...and get a used 20D body and either a Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 or a Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS? Sound like a plan? If so, which lens should I get? I really like the IS and the little bit of extra focal length, but a 2.8 would be nice glass to have. This would just be a walkaround lens (walkaround=dimly lit school, outside shooting scenes for quality). We will also be doing a lot of boating in t...... - 2008-11-13

Need a zomm for shooting sports on my 30D

I just purchased a 30D with a 28-135 IS lens. I don't think this is going to help me in shooting baseball games. So can some of you please recommend a nice zoom lens? I really would like to keep this under $400.00. Also can some of you posts a few pics with the lens you recommend? Thanks TomYour option are rather limited with a budget of $400. For shooting sports, you usually need a)a long lens and b)a fast lens (large maximum aperture). Long & fast lenses are rather expensive...so what is more important to you? You could get something like the Canon 75-300 F4.5-5.6 for a few hundred dollars (or something similar from Sigma or Tamron). The problem with these lenses is that they are slow, which means you will need plenty of lig...... - 2008-11-13

Looking for the best equipment and shows for 2008

While I consider myself to be a rookie when it comes to photography as a whole, I have great ambitions for 2008. I am looking for not only the higher end camera and video equipment but also for some of the upcoming shows to go to. I would love to hear what recommendations and information you might have for me. ChangeupNo need to double post.Well, you could go out and buy a Canon EOS 1Ds MKIII if you want the best camera... but then there's people who will say... You can go out and buy a Hasselblad digital if you want the best camera... then there's someone else who will say something even more expensive. I think you're going about it completely the wrong way. You can't just throw money at photography to get good pictures.Sideburns, The...... - 2008-11-13

What colleges, universities, and schools in the U.S. offer combination bachelors/masters degree physician assistant training programs?Hello fletermaus-ga, Thank you for your question.  Corporate Laptop Backup Solution (fastbit on Linux?)

Hello, We are looking for a very complete all in one backup solution for our company. We have 15 employees and half are rarely in the office, all use laptops, we have access to 3 servers, a Linux Red Hat, Solaris 10 and an X server. We would like to store images of everyone?s hard drive in case of drive failure and also upload incremental backups of their files every day. The big kicker here is that we would like an incremental patching ability like fastbit from Novastor. This allows only the part of the changed file to be uploaded to the server and the server blends it with their complete file. So instead of uploading a 10 meg file when changing only 1k of it only 1k will need to be uploaded. The closest solution has been a pro...... - 2008-11-13

Outsourcing development to outside countries (non-us!).

I own a small software development / consulting firm in Los Angeles, and I am currently looking to outsource some projects to a developer in another country. My question is where can I find out which countries are on the US black list and which countries can I legally do business with? In particular, Iran is the actual country this developer I am currently talking to located, and would like to know if I am able to buy his services. Thanks!I don't think there is any 'black list' of countries with which you cannot do business with. http://www.elance.com would be a good starting point to find out more developers offering services on various types of projects."No black list"? I think loosenut is wrong. Several countrie...... - 2008-11-13

Software related to time-and-attendance or workforce management

I am looking for information related to the time-and-attendance or workforce management software industry. Either direct data related to these topics, or research firms that could provide information about its size, competitors, dynamics etc.Hi there Ref! Just wanted to clarify, are you asking about staff management software in the States? Also, to get the overall "big picture" - are you looking to find this information with the purpose of purchasing some software to manage your workforce, or are you considering creating your own and want to find out about your potential competitors?Correct - staff management, otherwise known as workforce management, types of software products - but with the main emphasis on time-and-attendance.  How do I get set up to fix laptops?

Getting started in laptop repairI fix desktop computer problems with aplomb - both software and hardware. I can build a new machine, swap out motherboards, drives, etc. However, I have disappointed a number of my clients when they've asked me to fix laptop hardware problems. I think the laptop manufacturers make it difficult to get parts and service information. Any advice on getting the right info and/or parts would be appreciated.>If you want to order >replacement parts from a company, many companies require you to become >certified through their certification programs. That why I posted this question - I was hoping to get around that problem.>Another question I have is, why don't you want to become certified? >Sometim...... - 2008-11-13

 Computer monitors / lcd screens

How do I convert a VGA output from a normal video card in a PC to display on a hitachi LMG9900ZWCC LCD screen that I've "extracted" from an old laptop?this clarification is more of a responce to a comment made by haversian-ga. in searching the internet for an answer to my question i stumbled across this site before. the problem is how do i get one!!? is this another questions alltogether or do you know a site (or place) that sells them. please advise.Connectors for these sorts of LCDs are usually proprietary... you'll probably have to wire it directly using a VGA cable's pins...You will need an interface circuit. Typically the drive circuitry is integrated into the device, be it a laptop or stand-alone LCD monitor. You may ...... - 2008-11-13

Looking for third party ad server / software to organize online ad campaigns

My company is currently ramping up its internet advertising spend, and is buying about 450 million impressions per month. We are looking for software and/or a service provider that does some or all of the following: - Serves up the actual ad creative (obviously that would mean dealing with a third party ad server) - Allows us to automatically rotate and optimize creative within a particular campaign - Has a system for uploading and organizing creative - Has detailed tracking and reporting (including advanced tracking like conversion rates) - Ideally, lets us track spend. We already use Google AdWords and Google image ads. These are not general solutions. I?m looking specifically for a generalized ad management and/or ad serv...... - 2008-11-13

I'm looking for wholesale vendors, that are truly wholesale.Mike -- For a researcher to help, you'll want to be specific in your question. I am looking for the text of an Italian poem for children. Could you find this poem for me?I am certain that you're thinking of the old Swedish children's rhyme "Rida Rida Ranka." The same rhyme is known as "Ride Ride Ranke" in Norwegian and in Danish. This is often chanted or sung while bouncing a child on one's knee. Here is one of many translations of "Rida Rida Ranka" (this is the Swedish version): Rida, rida ranka, H sten heter Blanka Vart skall vi rida, Hem till att fria, Hos en Liten piga, Vad skall hon heta, Anna Maja Greta, Den tjoka ock feta, Nar vi kom dit, Var det ingen hemma, Mei n tv sm , hundar, som, Stog under b nken, Ock hamla p , ...... - 2008-11-13

Trying to find the title of a Science Fiction book

A few months ago I stumbled across a hardcover science-fiction book in my school's bookstore. I read blurb on the back and the jacket notes, etc, and decided the it might be interesting. However, I couldn't afford the book at the time. Now I'm interested in purchasing the book, but I can't for the life of me find any information about it. I had *believed* the title of the book to be "Jane Government", but searching on Amazon.com, Powells.com and Google revealed nothing for that title. Here is what I recall for sure about the book: First, the cover design of the book is striking, and is what got my attention in the first place. It is white, with a view of just a part of woman's face, very pale. One eye is v...... - 2008-11-13

attribution for this quote: "I could not smoke or drink and live to be a hundred

I was trying to find out the attribution to this quote: "I could not smoke or drink and live to be a hundred, but it would seem like a thousand." This may not be the exact quote, but is close to the original meaning. How about this quote, attributed to Woody Allen: "You can live to be a hundred if you give up all the things that make you want to live to be a hundred." http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Woody_AllenThat is not the quote that I was looking for. I thought the one I was looking for was Mark Twain, but couldn't find a reference for it.There's an old joke with a similar sentiment: DOCTOR: You've got to stop drinking, smoking, and chasing women. PATIENT: If I do that, will I live to be 100? DOCTOR: Naw,...... - 2008-11-13

Who was the worst published mystery writer ever?

Who is generally considered to be the worst published murder mystery or detective writer in the history of the world? Criteria: The writer should be dead, have received quotable bad reviews, and be known among the cognoscenti for having created -- collectively -- the dullest or most witless characters, devised the lousiest plots, come up with the most impossible endings, and written the most inane, flat or just plain awful prose? In other words, when readers of mysteries and detective stories talk amongst themselves about "the worst writer ever" in the field, whom do they generally agree upon? Also, for a small tip, who was the best for all the opposite reasons?Hello mccook-ga, Since Ed Wood is generally considered to be the ...... - 2008-11-13

Just did chimney reline, need professional advice

Just did the chimney reline for my pellet stove. There are two pipes, one for exhaust and one for fresh air. The one close to you with a separated cap is for fresh air, a 3" alimiumn pipe.  need advice on my lens situation - wide to zoom lens

Well I've graduated now, and so my job with the newspaper is over. It was a great year (photographically) for me i think, and i've learned a ton. I got to use a lot of great equipment, but now the time has come for me to buy my own stuff. Obviously there are a lot of choices in the wide to mid zoom lens category. Currently i have the world's worst lens, a Tamron 28-80mm lens. Obviously I don't want to spend TOO much money, but I at least want a decent lens. I wish i could get the new Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS, but i can't yet :( I guess the main candidates that i'm considering are...  Why do atheist use the religion and spirituality section if they don't believe in it?

The majority seem to only bash everyone else, what is the point? The same reason christians and muslims do - they're looking for converts.im atheist. i dont"bash" everyone/anyone unless they deserve it. but i think its fun getting to know other religions + other ppl of your belief. You don't have to have religion in order to be spiritual, atheists can be every bit as spiritual as you. Aetheists don't believe in your god, that doesn't mean they can't find spiritual happiness in themselves, not everyone is weak minded and have to seek inner strength in false idols and gods and seek strength in numbers such as is in the churches. Spirituality is a free form of belief, not a closed opinion like religion is.because the...... - 2008-11-13

Lyrics to a Broadway Musican song

A broadway muical, probably in the 70s, contained a song whose lyrics, in part, were: "I figure whenever youre down and out, the only way is up, and I'll be up like a rose, bud, high on the vine, etc..." What was the name of the show and what are the full lyrics of that song? The word "muical" should read "musical"Hello. The name of the show was "Wildcat." The lyricist was Carolyn Leigh. The song you remember was called "Hey, Look Me Over!" The original show starred Lucille Ball.  Locate a Movie

A 1991 movie entitled "Measuring the Roof of the World" told the story of the Great Survey of India (1802 - 1866). This survey culminated with the discovery of Mt. Everest in the Himilayas. The movie apparently appeared at least once on BBC and also here in the US (probably on PBS). One of the scriptwriters was Audrey Salkeld. The movie was produced by Horizons Programme. For a good summary of the Great Survey of India see http://www.gisuser.com.au/MM/content/2002/MM21/feature_2/MM21_feature_2.html This movie was probably similar to a PBS Nova special.  Music Search 2

Hey guys, I am looking for music that blends the genres of hip hop and swing. I've allready gotten some good stuff from my last search, but I was really looking for something very particular. A couple of years ago there was this Captain Morgan commercial which featured the two styles being fused together, where dancers+Captain Morgan=a very good time. I have been trying really hard to find a place where I can get that song, or even what that song was. Any ideas? Thanks very much. That was a kind of long way of saying I'm looking for the music from the Captain Morgan commercial of about three years ago that combines swing with hip hop.
