how do I restore a copy of the entire database?

January 7th, 2009 by cfz
  • Have a copy of the entire database (tables, etc, not a .sql file). How do I go about restoring that to mysql?

  • Thanks for the replies, I just copied the tables overriding the ones there, and it worked (at least the forum loaded, and I got my posts). Now I can move on! :)

  • Thanks, I did read that, but the problem is the backup is not in one file.

    (I didn't do it BTW :o )
you need to shut down mysql before you copy the actual data files..

  • Those are the actual database files - not backups. Restoring them is tricky and requires root access. I suggest you ask your host to do this.

  • Damn thats a big attachment table. whats the information you want to retrieve?

  • Yep, that's why I had to move to vB 3 (plus now I have deleted a lot of those).

I need to retrive two posts made in two particular forums.

  • In this case you will need to copy the db files to the appropriate direrctory on your server where the MySQL databases are stoered. You'll also need to make sure the file ownership and permissions are correct (look at othwer db files for guidance.)

The steps after that I am not too clear on. As I said it's a bit complicated. You should check the MySQL home page for more information:

    http://www.mysql.com

  • Assuming the backup is in one file, see Step 3 here:

    http://www.vbulletin.com/manual/movingservers.html

If the backup is in individual tables, then you will need to do the same thing with each table.

Well, I have root access, this is a dedicated server and this is also not longer a forum that is open. I just need to get some posts back before turning off this server. I did an upgrade and moved to a better server and vB3 but because I had to delete a lot of things in order for it not to crash while I waited to move some important information was lost, and I need to get it back.
