New Problem, Probably My End?

January 7th, 2009 by webmaster
  • When I log onto chat(started today) and click to enlarge the font, my cursor dissapears and my PC locks up(have to use reset button to get out)? Happen to anyone else? Any guesses what's up with my system? Since I got it back from the repair shop, it's haunted by many an evil ghost!

  • unles you're going to put your pc's in a network, solely for the use of networking you should use win2000...I'd stick with XP professional...oh yeah, try and re-install JAVA, maybe helps the problem as it's the java application that seems to crash your pc

  • I'm running W2000 and the only thing that keeps me from moving to XP is it's reliability. I can keep my computer running for months without having to reboot.

I'm using XP at work, but i don't have the feeling that it's got that same solidity to it. Maybe the PC at work is a bit lean on memory, which could make a world of difference, but for now i'm sticking to W2000.

  • I had a similar thing happen, but I don't remember which button I hit for it to happen. I'm guessing it's the same one that you hit.

  • my only hope is to format my drive and start over. I can't make up my mind on going to WIN2000 or XP PRO. 2000 is the only windows OS I haven't tried, so I'm tempted to go to it. I'm used to XP HOME, so moving up to PRO would be easy; just not sure which way to jump?

  • WinXP works just fine for me, so i'd recommend you to use that. Also, if you're going to re-install, there's a way to "slipstream" SP2 into the installation files, so your freshly installed system will already have all patches up to SP2 installed! :haihai:

Here are several instructions you can look at which I found using AV:
    Brian's PC (http://brians-pc.pcfire.net:81/slipstream_sp2.htm) (general info)
    CD-Freaks (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=103629) (for making a bootable CD)
    Neowin.net (http://www.neowin.net/articles.php?action=more&id=94) (illustrated guide)
